This year, forest fires have already caused “significant material damage,” Putin said at the beginning May. According to Avialesohrany, as of June 20, there were 60 forest fires in Russia on the area covered by fire, 45,749 hectares. Works on active fire extinguishing were carried out in Yakutia, Irkutsk, Amur and Tyumen regions, in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Krasnoyarsk, Kamchatka and Khabarovsk territories and in other regions. 1,634 people, 106 pieces of equipment, 32 aircraft took part in fire fighting in all regions. In 2022, approximately 16% more forest fires were detected in Russia than in the past year, said the head of Rosleskhoz Ivan Sovetnikov. At the same time, according to him, the areas covered by fire are comparable with the indicators of last year— about 600 thousand hectares. This suggests that fires began to be detected and eliminated more quickly, the head of Rosleskhoz believes. “About 90% of forest fires are liquidated in the first day from the moment of detection”, — Sovetnikov said. At the same time, in Siberia, according to him, the number of fires has doubled since the beginning of 2022, to 2.5 thousand. The increase in the number of fires is caused by human actions and agricultural grass burning. The situation is also aggravated by unfavorable weather conditions, in particular winds, hot and dry weather, and lack of precipitation.
